Which trades need a state license
In Oklahoma, plumbers, electricians and heating and air (mechanical) contractors are licensed by the Construction Industries Board. Roofing contractors must register with the same board.
Oklahoma does not issue a statewide general contractor license. Instead, many cities set their own rules. Oklahoma City, for example, requires contractors to be licensed with the city.
How to look up a license
The Construction Industries Board has a free online lookup for plumbing, electrical and mechanical licenses, and a separate list for registered roofers. Search by name and confirm the license is active. For local requirements, check with your city's permit or licensing office.
Ask about permits
Many projects, including water heaters, new circuits, HVAC replacements and additions, need a city permit and inspection. Ask who will pull the permit. A contractor who suggests skipping it is a red flag.
Get it in writing
A good contract spells out the scope of work, materials, price, payment schedule, timeline, and how changes are handled. Avoid paying the full amount before work begins.
Check references and insurance
Ask for recent references and photos of similar jobs, and ask for proof of liability insurance. Local businesses with a track record in your town are easier to hold accountable.
