How to Choose a Roofer After Hail in the OKC Metro

What to do after a hailstorm in Oklahoma City, Edmond, Norman and the rest of the metro, and how to choose a local roofer you can trust.

Start with safety and photos

Stay off the roof. From the ground, photograph any damage you can see: dented gutters, torn shingles, dings on vents, and damage to cars or siding that shows how large the hail was. Note the date of the storm.

Call your insurance company

Most homeowners policies have a deadline for reporting storm damage, so check yours early. Your insurer will explain the claim process and may send an adjuster. It helps to have a roofer inspect the roof before or around the adjuster's visit.

Watch out for storm chasers

After big storms, out-of-town crews often go door to door across the metro. Some do fine work, but many are gone before warranty problems show up. Be cautious with anyone who pressures you to sign that day, asks for full payment up front, or offers to cover your deductible.

Check registration and insurance

Oklahoma requires roofing contractors to register with the Construction Industries Board, and you can look up a registration on the CIB website. Ask for proof of liability insurance too. Some cities, including Oklahoma City, also require contractors to be licensed locally.

Compare written estimates

Get two or three written estimates from local roofers. Compare the materials, what happens to damaged decking, cleanup, the warranty, and the payment schedule, not just the price.

Choose someone who will still be here

A roof warranty is only as good as the company behind it. A local roofer with a real address and a history in your town is much easier to reach when something needs attention later.
