How to Choose a Plumber in Oklahoma City

What to check before you hire a plumber in Oklahoma City and the metro: licenses, permits, estimates and emergencies.

Check the license first

Plumbers in Oklahoma are licensed by the Construction Industries Board, and you can look up a license for free on the CIB website. Oklahoma City also requires contractors to be licensed with the city.

Know what kind of job you have

A dripping faucet, a water heater replacement and a slab leak are very different jobs. Describe the problem clearly when you call, and ask whether the plumber handles that type of work regularly.

Ask about permits

Many jobs, including water heater replacements and new lines, need a city permit and inspection. A licensed plumber will usually pull it for you. Ask whether it is included in the price.

Get the price in writing

Ask for a written estimate before work starts, and ask how the plumber charges for trip fees, after-hours calls and parts. For larger jobs, compare two or three estimates.

Be ready for an emergency

Know where your main water shutoff is before you need it. In a leak or burst pipe, shut the water off first, then call. Central Oklahoma cold snaps are a common cause of frozen pipes, so insulate exposed lines before winter.

Hire local

A plumber based near you can usually respond faster and is easier to reach if something needs attention after the job is done.
